The Rock Lock
Every now and again I see a guitar product that makes me think: ‘Wow, why hasn’t this been thought of before??’
The Rock Lock, which is the first product from the Rock Lock Company’ sits firmly in that bracket. Such a simple, intuitive design that really could help prevent the theft of one of your prized guitars.
Picture the scene: You’ve just played a fantastic fifty minute set, the stage lights dim and you get ready for a well deserved fifteen minute break. Now, where do you put your guitar? If you’re like me then you are pretty sceptical of the average pub-goer and take your guitar backstage and lock it safely away in its case, you may even carry it around with you. Well not any more, with the Rock Lock you can now be sure that your guitar can sit on stage and be reasonably secure.
It’s really simple, you lock the neck clamp around your guitar and tie it to something heavy or immovable, like your amp head, guitar cab, maybe even a radiator that is bolted to the wall or whatever you can find. And now your guitar is going nowhere.
Now before you start slating the product let me clear one or two questions that are likely to come my way.
No, the Rock Lock will not single handedly prevent the theft of your guitar. You also need some common sense. If you locked a ’57 Goldtop to a lamppost and left it, you can be pretty certain it won;t be there when you get back. The Rock Lock is not to prevent crime completely, it is to be used as a deterrent and to prevent a crime of opportunity. It is so easy if a guitar is sitting around to go and snatch it and run out of the venue or shop. the Rock Lock means you cannot just grab it and run, you would have to somehow break the lock, remove the guitar neck, cut the cord (which is made of pretty tough stainless steel braided wire) and then run out, all without somebody seeing you. Think about it, just because you put your passport into a safe, lock the apartment door and cross your fingers, does not mean it will still be there when you get back! (Yes this happened to me!!)
With the right amount of common sense attached to the user, the Rock Lock really could prevent a crime of opportunity and at around $50 RRP, for me at least, it is a worth investment.
Here is a video I made checking out the Rock Lock:
