Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer

IBANEZ TS-9 (TUBESCREAMER)
By Adam Ironside

There is a nigh on infinite amount of information out there about the tubescreamer and its various models, so instead of giving a full breakdown etc. I intend to talk of my opinions about the TS-9, which is a re-issue by the way, and my experiences with it.

Features

A classic three knob design, the design on which most overdrive pedals are now based. It looks sexy and stylish but the unusual footswitch has proven to be a problem at times. The TS-9 is NOT a true-bypass pedal which is unpopular with a lot of people. The build quality is generally great but in recent times Ibanez have seemed to use cheaper alternative op-amp chips instead of the legendary JRC-4558 which is what helps give the TS-9 its legendary tone.

Sounds

Pretty much everyone knows how a tubescreamer sounds,  the reduced, tightened bass and the nice smooth mid hump which adds smoothness and presence to the tone. The TS-9 is far from being a transparent overdrive which some people prefer, it defnitly alters your tone, but in a benfitial way in my opinion.

The tone knob has quite a good range available but you will find the majority of users keep it between zero and half way to abandon some of the excessive treble and keep the tone smooth and mid-rangey.

Often the TS-9 is known as being a great lead boost (it also sounds good pushing a clean channel) but on many classic rock and metal recordings it was used on rthym guitar tracks to tighten the low end and give the guitars a little more presence in the mix. It also adds a nice clarity and sustain to die for.

Overall

The TS-9 is a classic and available in many incarnations. Mine is a re-issue, and I love it. I have never had the oppertunity to try out an original but it is often stated that the originals are noticeably better. A classic overdrive pedal with a wide variety of tones and a lot of versatillity for under a hundred quid. What more can you ask for?

Rating

8.5 - A fantastic pedal that will probably never leave my collection as it’s versatility keeps it useful. If you don’t have one, check ‘em out!

The TS-9 is available EVERYWHERE at a good price, snap one up.
